Scout Troops 64 and 4064 joined forces with local bakery Ladera Patisserie to hold a bake sale at the annual adult softball league finals at Portola Valley Town Center on Sunday, Sept. 17th. The final take from the sale of brownies, cinnamon toffee cookies, ube shortbread and the obligatory chocolate chips was $2,200 and possibly as much as $4,400 if a corporate matching grant comes through, making this by far the most successful single-day fundraiser in recent troop memory. The troop will donate the money to the Moroccan Red Crescent, a non-profit that will support emergency response and relief for those in need after the devastating 6.8 magnitude earthquake that killed more than 2,860 and injured 2,560 more on September 8th. Our Patrol Leaders Council selected the Moroccan earthquake relief as a service project because one of our members is of French Algerian descent and has family in the area most heavily impacted.
Life Scout Cole Kawaja’s Eagle project was to make sure that unused fruit and vegetables from backyard farms and orchards around Silicon Valley finds its way to food programs. So many homeowners in the area plant vines and trees with the best intentions, then can’t keep up with production and leave fruit to rot on the trees, or the vegetables on the vines. Over the course of several months, Cole located unpicked apples, limes, pears, figs, tomatoes, squash and persimmons in home gardens around Portola Valley, then rallied fellow scouts to help pick and deliver the goods to different distribution centers where they will feed families in need.
Scouts made flower arrangements and cards for seniors ling in The Sequoias.
Troops 64/4064 did an annual service project at their November 3, 2021 meeting, creating dozens of flower bouquets for residents of The Sequoias retirement community and collecting donations of canned and non-perishable foods for the Catholic Worker House in Redwood City, which supplies food to 70 needy families per week. The Scouts also wrote notes and letters to people at The Sequoias. The flowers were placed in the dining room, in hallways, in meeting rooms and in some individual bedrooms. Residents were so touched by the troop’s efforts that they sent a thank you note in response.
